Annual participation in ‘Stride for a Cure’ helps raise money for Hong Kong Cancer Fund

Hong Kong— Manulife (International) Limited again sponsored the Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s annual “Stride for a Cure” charity walk, held yesterday, November 20, 2005, at the Tai Tam Country Park. Besides donating to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, Manulife also formed a corporate team of 20 staff to participate in the walk.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the ‘Stride for a Cure’ and more than 2,500 people from all walks of life in the community and 300-plus cancer survivors joined in this healthy exercise. Funds raised from the event will be directed to cancer research in Hong Kong, including projects in nasopharyngeal, colorectal and liver cancer. As part of this year’s anniversary celebration, the Hong Kong Cancer Fund also honoured cancer survivors who had participated in the walk for the past 10 years to thank them for demonstrating their strength and courage as well as to celebrate their survival.

“We are delighted to be in a position to provide support and assistance to this extremely worthwhile cause,” said Michael Huddart, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Hong Kong, Manulife (International) Limited. “We believe the walk is a healthy and fun way to help raise funds to fight against the disease, and we are pleased that our involvement can help raise the community’s awareness in lending a hand to those in our society who are less fortunate.”

“Manulife has been one of the valuable supporters of Hong Kong Cancer Fund since 1997,” said Sally Lo, Chairman of Hong Kong Cancer Fund. “We are grateful for its generous contribution; its ongoing support to us will mean a lot to the cancer patients.”

The event consisted of a 5-km or 12-km route, with both walks starting and finishing at the Hong Kong International School in Tai Tam. Brunch and entertainment including a live music performance, a lucky draw in a carnival atmosphere and a children’s play area were arranged for the participants after the completion of the walk.
