Manulife contributes to a wide variety of projects in the Asian territories where we operate:
Helping Communities Rebuild
In Indonesia, the Manulife Care Foundation of Manulife Indonesia donated goods and basic necessities to aid victims in Merapi and Yogya after an earthquake and volcanic eruption.
In Thailand, Manulife Thailand staff and agents organized a donation drive to provide rice, milk, drinking water, cooked food and money to flood victims in Nakornratchasrima Province.
Manulife-Sinochem completed the renovation of six special schools for disabled children in Sichuan Province. The renovations were completed with a 5 million donation collected by Manulife staff and agents from around the world and matched by Manulife Financial in the aftermath of the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan.
Supporting children and education for the future
Helping children grow and prosper aligns with Manulife’s brand “For your future”. In 2010, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Canada / China relations, Manulife’s joint venture Manulife-Sinochem creating a scholarship for economically disadvantaged students with strong academics to attend the Bethune College of Medicine at Jilin University. Manulife also created an endowment for an International Scholarship in the Faculty of Graduate Studies for a Junior Fellow at Norman Bethune College, at York University in Toronto. 
Manulife Vietnam set up a university scholarship fund designed to reward outstanding Vietnamese students who are children of current employees, agents, collectors and in-force policyholders, for their high school performance and top university entrance examination scores, and also granted scholarships to underprivileged students in the cities where new general offices were established.
Manulife Japan continued to sponsor Manulife CAPS Management Contest, an economic competition for elementary school children conducted by Junior Achievement Japan which helps students learn about the economy in a real world environment.
Manulife Indonesia funded renovation work at two schools in Sukabumi and donated computers and equipment to other schools. Manulife-Sinochem and Manulife Philippines also donated school computers and equipment to schools in China and the Philippines respectively.
In Hong Kong, Manulife launched a new sponsorship program to help students at Sheng Kung Hui St. Christopher's Home and provided funding to the Heep Hong Society to set up a Manulife Adventure Land in its early education and training centre in one of its centers, to help improve the imitation, coordination, motor planning skills and balance of children with autism and various physical and mental disabilities.
To show support for the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, Manulife Singapore made a donation to its Help-A-Kid coin bank project as a Children’s Day Gift to underprivileged children. Staff and Financial Planners were encouraged to contribute for this worthy cause and Manulife matched dollar-for-dollar on the contributions they made.
Manulife Philippines also marked 10 years of partnership with Migi’s Corner Foundation, Inc, a charity created to set up special recreational activity spaces in hospitals for children battling serious illnesses. Similarly, Manulife Japan continued its fundraising activities in support of the Waku Waku Room Program to develop playrooms in hospitals.
Promoting health and wellness
Manulife employees across Asia donated blood to the Red Cross and supported Terry Fox runs to raise money for cancer research.
Manulife Vietnam continued its support for Operation Smile by donating funds to provide free surgeries for 100 children and young adults born with facial deformities.
Manulife Taiwan made a donation to the Hope Society to fund the production of wigs, one of the most needed items for cancer patients during winter season.
Manulife Malaysia donated rehabilitation equipment to Persatuan Kebajikan Bagi Orang Istimewa, a non-profit organization providing free services to disabled people in the Kampar area.
In China, Manulife-Sinochem raised money through a charity event to provide 450 free cataract surgeries to underprivileged seniors in five cities in Sichuan. Funds were raised through the sale 30,000 special light fixtures in 41 cities.
Aiding environmental preservation
Staff from Manulife Indonesia joined Jakarta Green Monster, a community of urban wetland volunteers to plant 600 mangrove seeds in Suaka Margasatwa Muara Angke (Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve) and Hutan Ekowisata Mangrove Kapuk (Kapuk Mangrove Forest Ecotourism) – Angke. The seedlings will help sustain the mangrove forests, an important component of the wetland ecosystem, and serve as a breeding ground for many marine organisms.
In Thailand, staff and agents from Manulife Thailand joined more than 80 people in a conservation program to produce 1,000 Effective Microorganism Balls (EM Balls) to drop in the area of Larn Island, Pattaya, Chonburi Province, to help conserve marine resources. EM Balls are mud balls made of live micro-organisms used to purify water and restore aquatic life.
Staff volunteers from Manulife Hong Kong paired up with children from S.K.H. St. Christopher’s Home to help remove invasive plant life at the Mai Po Nature Reserve to maintain the eco-system of the Reserve, and joined The Green Power Hike, a major event organized by Green Power to raise funds for local environmental education and protection projects.
