John Hancock Long-Term Care Insurance has been honoured with awards from the League of American Communications Professionals (LACP) and the Interactive Media Council for several of its print and online marketing initiatives in 2009. The LACP gave JHLTC several '2009 Spotlight Awards', including one platinum, one gold, and one silver award. The Interactive Media Council honoured JHLTC with its 'Outstanding Achievement' prize in the Interactive Media Award competition for the JHLTC producer website in the Financial Services category.

John Hancock Retirement Plan Services wins 18 awards for communications excellence
John Hancock Retirement Plan Services was recognized for communications excellence by the League of American Communications Professionals (LACP) winning five platinum, seven gold, four silver, and two bronze awards. Multi-media, print and web communications were all honoured. The communications focused on a wide range of audiences including 401(k) participants, plan sponsors, financial representatives, third party administrators and internal audiences.

Housing Partnership honours John Hancock
John Hancock was presented an award at a recent event for the Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership (MBHP). The event highlighted the partnership between several housing non-profits and several corporations – including John Hancock – who joined forces in 1987 to build and invest in 900 units of affordable housing in Boston.

Two Manulife executives named to 'Canada's Most Powerful Women' list
The Women’s Executive Network (WXN) has named Lynda Sullivan, EVP and Controller, and Stephani Kingsmill, SVP and General Manager, Real Estate, to its annual list of ‘Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100’. Sullivan was honoured for the first time, and Kingsmill was named to the list for the second consecutive year.

Board Games, Globe and Mail's annual ranking of corporate governance practices in Canada, ranks Manulife Financial fourth, sharing with Bank of Nova Scotia and Royal Bank of Canada. Manulife scored 91 out of 100. Since 2002, Manulife has ranked first four times and was within the top five six times.

Manulife’s Thai equity funds top ranked by AIMC
Two funds from Manulife Asset Management (Thailand) Company Limited have received top rankings for their one-year performance by the Association of Investment Management Companies (AIMC). The two funds, the Manulife Strength-Core Equity Fund and Manulife Strength Equity Value Fund, ranked first and second respectively on a risk-adjusted return basis, according to the AIMC.

Seven of MFC Global Investment Management (Asia)’s fixed income managers have been named among the “Most Astute Investors in Local Currency Bonds 2009” in The Asset’s Benchmark Research survey. This is the third consecutive year that the company’s fixed income capabilities have been recognized by the survey. The Mutual Fund Education Alliance (MFEA) honoured John Hancock Funds with nine awards in total, including “Best Overall Communications” for both Retail and Advisor Communications in the large company category (more than $25 billion in assets under management). This marks the fourth year in a row that John Hancock has won MFEA’s top award, and the third consecutive year the company has won more than eight awards in total.

John Hancock wins four awards at In-House Agency Forum creativity awards show
At the first annual In-House Agency Forum (IHAF) Awards, John Hancock’s Brand Communications & Creative Services group won four awards; the largest total of any of the entrants. In the Corporate Identity category, John Hancock won the gold for its branding submission, which included the Brand Book, Brand Essence video and Brand Stewardship video. In the Electronic/Interactive category, John Hancock won the only award for a video in this category, taking the bronze for its “Déjà vu” video. In the Multi-Media Campaign category, John Hancock was awarded the gold for the 2008 Marathon Event Branding, and bronze for the “Advisor of Choice” campaign.

MFC Global Investment Management fund managers named amongst ‘Most Astute Investors in Local Currency Bonds’
Seven of MFC Global Investment Management’s fixed income fund managers have been named among the Most Astute Investors in Local Currency Bonds, by The Asset magazine. The award is part of The Asset’s annual Benchmark Survey and is voted for by sell side individuals to recognize those fund managers who have invested astutely in the face of market adversity. The seven fund managers are: Victoria Ip, Ronald Chan, Paula Chan (Hong Kong), Aira Gaspar, Anthony Garces (Philippines), Akira Okada (Singapore) and Djumala Sutedja (Indonesia).

Wall Street Journal ranks John Hancock Global Opportunities Fund in the top 25 ‘One-Year Best Performers’
In the Wall Street Journal’s most recent quarterly mutual fund performance roundup, the John Hancock Global Opportunities Fund was ranked in the top 25 ‘One-Year Best Performers’ for the entire U.S. mutual fund industry. The Fund generated a return of 40.6 per cent for the one-year ending September 30, 2009.

Two John Hancock funds take top two spots in a ranking of all fixed-income mutual funds
Two John Hancock funds, including the John Hancock Funds II – High Income Fund and John Hancock High Yield Fund, have taken the top two spots in a ranking of all fixed-income mutual funds as reported by Morningstar. The John Hancock Funds II-High Income Fund climbed 29 per cent in the quarter, including reinvested interest, and the John Hancock High Yield Fund returned 29 per cent.

Three MFC GIM managed funds earn new five-star Morningstar ratings
Morningstar released its September 2009 U.S. mutual fund rankings which saw three MFC GIM managed John Hancock funds earn a new five-star rating. Included were the JH Large Cap Equity fund and JH Global Opportunities fund, both managed by the Intrinsic Value team in Boston; and the JHF II Strategic Income fund, managed by the Global Multi-Sector team also from Boston. Other MFC GIM managed funds that have the Morningstar five-star rating include: • Manulife Strategic Income fund • Manulife Structured Bond; • MFC GIM Pooled Short-Term fund; and • MFC GIM Pooled Canadian Core Plus Bond.

Peter Rubenovitch, Manulife’s former CFO, is one of five Canada’s TopGun CFO’s named by worldwide advisory firm Brendan Wood International (BWI). The TopGun designation is awarded by the BWI Worldwide Panel of Shareholders, consisting of 2,500 professional asset managers, based on voting conducted in the past 12 months. CFOs are ranked based on the quality of management, including their financial strategy and execution capability, and their accountability and clear communication with investors regarding the strategy and business development focus.

Manulife named one of Canada’s most socially responsible corporations
Manulife Financial has been named one of Canada’s ’50 Most Socially Responsible Corporations’ in the Jantzi-MacLean’s Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2009. The selection is based on a broad range of social, environment and governance indicators. Manulife was credited for its investment in renewable and alternative energy sectors as well as getting Hancock Timber Resource Group-managed timberlands certified under various sustainable forestry management programs.

Manulife is ranked number one in three Individual rankings of Canadian insurers: Leading Life Premiums, Leading Annuity Writers and Leading Direct Life in Force with a market share of 34.38%, 30.03% and 18.30% respectively. In the Group rankings, Manulife is at top of the charts in Leading Life Premiums and Leading Direct Life in Force with market shares of 18.62% and 20.96% respectively. The company also ranked number one for Personal Accident and Sickness Insurance in Canada with a market share of 19.38% and Net Premiums of $410,277,000 in the Individual category, and a market share of 20.68% and Net Premiums of $3,020,017,000 in the Group category.

Brand Finance Canada’s bi-annual study of trademark financial value ranks Manulife fourth, while Sun Life was the 17th most valuable brand. London Life and Canada Life ranked 25th and 30th, respectively, while Great-West Life was 32nd.

In a Wall Street Journal ranking of funds for the year-to date performance ending April 30, 2009, John Hancock Small Cap Intrinsic Value Fund was ranked as the best performing “Small-Cap Core” fund. The fund returned 22.9% over the period, making it best in class out of a category universe of 797 funds.

MFC GIM Canadian Pooled Money Market Fund ranked #1 by Mercer
Investment consultant Mercer ranked MFC GIM Canadian Pooled Money Market Fund as the best performing institutional pooled money market fund for the 2, 3, 4 and 5 year periods ending March 31, 2009. The pooled fund earned the top spot out of more than 30 competitors. The fund was also a solid second quartile for the 12 months ending Q1 2009.

Manulife is most trusted brand for sixth year running
For the sixth consecutive year, Manulife has won the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Gold Award for the insurance company category in Hong Kong. The award is based on an independent vote by consumers through the annual Asia-wide Consumer Brand Preference Survey. The survey, which aims to identify those brands that are most appealing to Asian consumers, was carried out by the Nielsen Company.

The Wall Street Journal’s Q1 2009 mutual fund performance rankings listed two MFC GIM managed fixed income funds on the John Hancock funds platform among its “Category Kings” for top performance. John Hancock II Active Bond Fund, managed by Howard Greene and Jeff Given, was listed as the fifth-best performing “General US Taxable” bond fund for the quarter ending March 31, 2009. John Hancock Bond Fund, also managed by Howard Greene and Jeff Given, was listed as the tenth-best performing “Long Term Bond” fund, out of a field of over 300 other offerings, for the quarter ending March 31, 2009.
