Building Our Communities Globally

 

Manulife’s approach to corporate social responsibility around the world aligns with our focus on delivering strong, reliable, trustworthy and forward-thinking solutions for our clients and for the communities where we work.

Our 2010 Public Accountability Statement highlights our efforts in Canada, the United States and Asia to build stronger communities, promote health and wellness, enhance environmental sustainability and harness the power of volunteering in the community. 

In 2010:

• More than 12,000 employees and distribution partners contributed 54,000 volunteer hours in communities where we operate. 
• In Canada, we commissioned innovative research to determine what motivates people to volunteer and partnered with Volunteer Canada and Get Involved to create a website (www.getvolunteering.ca) connecting people with volunteer opportunities.
• Manulife also partnered with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to present Canada’s Champions of Change, a one-hour television program showcasing Canada’s top volunteers.

In 2011:

• Subsequent to year end, Manulife has committed a minimum of $1 million to help the citizens of Japan rebuild their country after the earthquake of March 11, 2011.

Manulife’s corporate giving operates under a decentralized model that emphasizes giving back to the communities where it does business and encouraging employees to do the same. Local managers choose the area of focus for philanthropy, identify partners and determine how best to encourage employee involvement.
